(WASHINGTON D.C., 10/11/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today marks Indigenous Peoples’ Day by honoring the contributions that Indigenous people have made to our nation and remembering injustices faced by Indigenous people throughout American history and in the present.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“Today, we honor the contributions that Indigenous people have made to our nation, and we also remember the injustice that Indigenous people have faced throughout the history of our nation.
“Indigenous people experienced generations of systematic extermination and expulsion at the hands of genocidal European colonizers and, later, our own government. Today, Indigenous Americans continue to face economic and racial injustice.
“Despite this, Indigenous Americans have persevered – and greatly enriched our nation’s culture. We urge all Americans to stand in solidarity with Indigenous people, and we urge our leaders to take concrete restorative action to protect and uplift indigenous Americans.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
