Most responding Maryland Muslim voters favored Jill Stein for president, Angela Alsobrooks for U.S. Senate and cited Gaza as top issue
The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations today announced the results of its online post-election community survey of American Muslim voters in Maryland.
SEE: 2024 Online Exit Poll of Maryland Muslim Voters
The online survey distributed to Maryland Muslim community, conducted between November 3 through November 6, focused on the U.S. presidential and U.S. Senate races, and depicts a snapshot of voter engagement, preferences and priorities.
“Muslim voters in our state are politically engaged and make up an increasingly influential voting bloc especially in local and state races,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “Voting is a crucial component of building American Muslim political power, and CAIR commends everyone who participated in this election. The findings of this online community survey reveal a significant decline in support among Muslim voters for the Democratic presidential candidate compared with past elections, reflecting mounting frustration and disillusionment amidst Israel’s ongoing U.S.-backed genocide in Gaza and expansion of violence across the region.”
Key Findings:
- 81 percent of respondents voted for Jill Stein for president, with 12 percent voting for Kamala Harris and Donald Trump trailing with approximately 4 percent
- Almost all respondents reported voting in the election
- Approximately one-third of respondents voted during Early Voting
- Nearly 30 percent of voters submitted mail-in ballots
- About 80 percent of voters voted for Angela Alsobrooks for U.S. Senate, with approximately 7.2 percent casting their ballots for Larry Hogan, Jr.
- The top priority for respondents was by far foreign policy issues, particularly the ongoing genocide in Gaza
As a nonpartisan organization, CAIR encourages all American Muslims to participate in national, state and local elections, conduct voter registration drives, provide training programs, issue briefings, organize candidate forums, volunteer in campaigns, and lead get-out-the-vote initiatives. Nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations like CAIR cannot engage in political activities that support one candidate or party over another, but CAIR is committed to assessing Muslim communities’ priorities and concerns, and promoting voter turnout.
