The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today welcomed the suspension of the University of Maryland tennis club after some members allegedly distributed racist imagery to other tennis organizations.
The University of Maryland (UMD) has suspended its tennis club after officials learned that racist imagery was included in program materials sent to other tennis organizations about a weekend fall tournament held at the College Park campus. The university has apologized to the team members who received the racist imagery, including those at Howard University. The racist imagery reportedly targeted Black people and included a graphic that depicted Ku Klux Klan hoods.
“We welcome the decision of UMD administrators to suspend this club and urge them to use this incident as an opportunity to educate students on the danger of racism and hate,” said CAIR Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry.
