The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Baltimore County Board of Education member Maggie Litz Domanowski to publicly apologize and remove a social media post about “Sharia Law” that promotes anti-Muslim stereotypes and contributes to an atmosphere of hostility toward Muslim students and families, or otherwise resign.
[NOTE: Anti-Muslim bigots have recently manufactured a misinformation campaign about Islamic principles in an attempt to demonize American Muslims and their institutions and to attack the faith of Islam.]
“Public officials who serve on a school board have a special responsibility to promote an environment in which every child and family is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of faith,” said Zainab Chaudry, CAIR Maryland Director. “As families prepare for the new school year, anti-Muslim rhetoric from an education official is particularly troubling because Muslim children and their families are part of the very community that the Board of Education is entrusted to serve. We call on Ms. Domanowski to remove this post, acknowledge the harm she’s caused, apologize, and reaffirm her commitment to the equal dignity and safety of all Baltimore County students. If she refuses, she is unfit to serve in this role and should resign.”
CAIR Maryland has repeatedly raised concerns about anti-Muslim bias in Maryland schools and universities.
The Muslim civil rights organization recently announced the release of two new resources designed to help families navigate public school systems, understand their rights and respond effectively to bullying, harassment and discrimination during the 2026-27 academic year.
The resources are available free to students, parents, guardians, educators, school administrators and community advocates:

Washington, D.C.-based CAIR offers a booklet, called “An Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
