CAIR-MI Decries Appointment of Attorney From Islamophobic Thomas More Law Center as Immigration Supervisory Judge

(FARMINGTON HILLS, MI, 6/4/2020) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), a local chapter the nation’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today decried the appointment of Brandon Bolling as immigration supervisory judge of an attorney who currently works for the Thomas More Law Center, which is known for its litigation against the religious rights of Muslims in the United States.

Thomas More Law Center has as its mission the “preservation of America’s Judeo Christian heritage.” The center claims that it is attempting to restore America to its Christian tradition and foundations.

According to the center, American Muslims are using litigation to perform a “stealth jihad” in order to transform America into an “Islamic nation.” A large body of their work involves litigation and propaganda warfare against the religion of Islam, American Muslims and their civil rights, including lawsuits against Michigan public schools that held a diversity training focused on Muslim culture and religious competency.

Despite the fact that Thomas More Law Center has as its core mission to uphold religious liberties, in 2019 it was retained by members of the City of Troy Zoning Board of Appeals to help defend them in a lawsuit brought by CAIR-MI on behalf of Adam Community Center for the board’s discriminatory denial of a zoning application that would have established the first Mosque in the city of Troy which is home to a large Muslim population.

Following CAIR-MI’s lawsuit against the city of Troy, the Department of Justice in 2019 filed its own lawsuit against the City of Troy for the discriminatory denial of Adam’s zoning application.

“It is unacceptable to have someone on the bench who clearly believes that Muslims are the enemy and has actively utilized the court system to curtail the rights of American Muslims,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid. “Mr. Bolling’s past practices within his role as litigation attorney for the Thomas More Law Center gives rise to serious concerns about whether he will be able to fulfill the duties of the bench to make determinations on immigration cases involving Muslims with impartiality.”

“A fundamental principle of our judicial system is that justice is blind and impartial. Stacking the courts with judges who hold biased views of individuals based solely on their religious identity threatens the very fabric of our judicial system,” said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Amy Doukoure.

CAIR has repeatedly expressed concern about Islamophobic and racist Trump administration policies and appointments, including the appointment of Perkins last year.
