CAIR-Minnesota Calls on Lawmakers to Override Senator Latz’s Blockage of Housing Discrimination Legislation

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today expressed its deep disappointment and concern over Democratic Senator Ron Latz’s decision to block critical legislation aimed at protecting vulnerable families from housing discrimination and called on lawmakers to override his decision.

The proposed measure was designed to safeguard families utilizing government-issued housing vouchers, such as Section 8, from discrimination by landlords. This legislation was especially vital for Minnesota’s seniors, minorities, and the Somali community—94% of whom are renters in the state—who face disproportionately high rental costs and housing instability.

Minnesota is grappling with a severe housing crisis, with approximately 8,000 individuals experiencing homelessness each night. The failure to pass this legislation exacerbates this crisis, as fewer than 25% of families eligible for housing vouchers can currently find accepting landlords. Source of income protections, adopted by 20 other states, have proven effective in enhancing housing access and reducing segregation.

“Senator Latz’s decision to block this legislation is a significant blow to our most vulnerable communities and will make more families homeless,” said Jaylani Hussein, executive director of CAIR-MN. “This bill would have provided essential protections to families struggling to find stable housing, particularly within the Somali community and other minority groups. It is imperative that our lawmakers take immediate action to address these disparities and support fair housing for all Minnesotans.”

Hussein added, “We are calling other legislators to support the bill and override the threats from Senator Latz.”

Senator Latz’s decision marks a significant setback in the fight against housing discrimination and the effort to eradicate family homelessness in Minnesota. Despite substantial advocacy and clear evidence of need, the Senate’s inaction leaves many vulnerable Minnesotans without essential protections.

CAIR-MN urges all Minnesotans to take immediate action. Contact your representatives to express your support for source of income protections and comprehensive fair housing laws. Highlight the importance of legislative measures to address and rectify housing inequalities in Minnesota and urge lawmakers to reinstate these crucial protections in the final bill.
