CAIR-Minnesota Condemns Mayor Frey’s Veto of the Ceasefire Resolution by Minneapolis City Council

The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemns Mayor Frey’s Veto of the Ceasefire Resolution passed by the Minneapolis City Council last week.

Last week, in a veto-proof 9-3 vote, the council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, an end to U.S. aid to Israel, the release of Palestinian and Israeli prisoners, and other measures to de-escalate further violence and promote peace.

CAIR-MN is strongly condemning Mayor Frey’s Veto and is very confident the majority of Minneapolis City Council members will override his veto next week.

In a statement, CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:

“We are thankful to the council members, who passed the symbolic Ceasefire Resolution last week, and we are very confident that they will be able to override the mayor’s divisive and politicized veto next week. It is unfortunate that the mayor is ignoring 26,900 people killed and 65,949 injured in Gaza, the majority of which are children and women. He is making politically calculated decisions and playing identity politics against Palestinian lives and Muslims constituents that he is supposed to support and protect as their mayor in challenging times like this. There are constituents and families who have lost their loved ones in Minneapolis and all we are asking of the City of Minneapolis is to support a Ceasefire resolution that pushes our federal representatives and government to stop the killings right now.”

The ceasefire resolution aligns with CAIR-MN’s mission to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

CAIR-MN stands ready to support Palestinian and Muslim Americans who lost their family members in this tragedy. The majority vote of the council members and diverse coalitions behind this resolution are some of the ways we can combat Islamophobia and Antisemitic in our communities. We believe this vote brings us one step closer to a just and lasting peace for all people.
