CAIR-Minnesota Welcomes DHS Extension and Re-Designation of TPS to Somali Nationals

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 1/12/23) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today welcomed the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) extension and re-designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somali nationals currently in the United States.

Background:

TPS extension and re-designation will allow Somali nationals residing in the United States as of January 11, 2023, to apply for TPS, so long as they meet all eligibility requirements.

“We welcome the Biden administration’s decision to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis, many of whom have lived in Minnesota and the United States for nearly three decades,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein. “With Somalia facing devastating famine and ongoing armed conflict, TPS holders would be at risk of harm if forced to return. Allowing these individuals to stay in the country they call home is the right and ethical decision.”

Hussein added: “We thank the administration for listening to advocates and lawmakers who have pushed for this action. We must now continue to advocate for a lasting solution, including a pathway to citizenship for all those seeking a better life in the United States.”
