The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today welcomed the Lino Lakes City Council’s vote to censure Council Member Chris Lyden over his response to an anti-Muslim email that praised a hate-filled rant targeting the Muslim community.
At last night’s council meeting, Lyden, while holding a Quran, downplayed the seriousness of his actions, calling the issue “trivial” and defending his response. Despite his objections, the council voted 3-1 in favor of the censure, signaling that Lyden’s remarks do not reflect the views of the city or council. However, this censure does not go far enough.
“We appreciate the council’s decision to censure Chris Lyden, but we remain firm in our call for his resignation,” said Jaylani Hussein, CAIR-MN’s executive director. “Lyden’s unapologetic response and continued Islamophobic rhetoric show he is unfit to serve. His actions embolden hate, and his presence on the council threatens the inclusivity and safety of the community.”
CAIR-MN continues to urge city leaders to hold Lyden fully accountable and renews its call for his immediate resignation.
“City officials must take stronger action against elected officials like Lyden who perpetuates hate. Tolerating this behavior and endorsement of Islamophobia only deepens divisions within the community,” Hussein added.
