(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 11/12/21) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today welcomed an investigation by the Prior Lake school district and the Savage Police Department into an incident of racist harassment targeting a Black student who attempted suicide.
On Tuesday, the Prior Lake school district confirmed it was launching an investigation into a racist video targeting Nya Sigin, a Black student at Prior Lake High School who previously attempted suicide. In the video, a white student goes on a racist tirade, using the n-word and telling the student she should kill herself. On Thursday, students staged a protest outside school in support of Sigin and calling on the school district to ensure the safety of students of color. The Savage Police Department revealed Thursday they are also investigating the incident. Encouraging suicide is illegal according to Minnesota state law.

In a statement, CAIR-MN’s Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:
“This racist and hurtful targeted attack to incite suicide is a serious threat against the wellbeing of all students of color. Prior Lake Area Schools must ensure a safe educational environment for all students and address the many concerns students made in their walkout protest on Thursday.”
