(NEW YORK, N.Y., 7/12/2021) — The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned the violent hate crime targeting an Asian woman yesterday afternoon, Sunday, July 11, 2021, in Manhattan.
According to a media report, Frank Rodriguez, 63, was charged with a hate crime for spitting on and hitting an Asian woman with an umbrella. This hateful incident occurred at East 32nd and Park Avenue; Rodriguez was walking toward the victim, 54 years old, when he allegedly shouted “F—k you, you Asian b—h,” according to sources. He then doused her in water and slapped her wrist with an umbrella.
Rodriguez is charged with assault, menacing and aggravated harassment, and criminal possession.

In a statement denouncing this hate crime, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“While national attention has largely shifted away from anti-Asian hate crimes, violent attacks continue to endanger and harm members, particularly elders, of the Asian-American community. We must stand in firm solidarity with our Asian-American community members and reject bigoted insults and assaults at all times.”
