(NEW YORK, NY, 9/7/2022)— The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed hate crime charges for an allegedly anti-Asian attack in Queens this past July.
That alleged attacker reportedly headbutted an Asian man in an unprovoked attack on July 12. Rudy Coslopez, 41, reportedly approached the victim and allegedly stated: “You Asians are the reason I cannot get a job. You Chinese are scum.” He has been charged with assault as a hate crime, aggravated harassment as a hate crime and assault.

In a statement CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“We welcome the hate crime charges in this case and hope the actions of law enforcement authorities will send a strong message to those who would contemplate targeting others based on hatred and xenophobia.”
She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.
