CAIR-NY Welcomes Hate Crime Charge for Alleged Antisemitic Attack in Queens

(NEW YORK, NY, 9/15/2022) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed a hate crime charge brought against a man who allegedly attacked a Jewish man in Queens on Tuesday morning.

James Purcell, 34, was arraigned on a six-count criminal complaint charging him with assault as a hate crime, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, aggravated harassment, and other crimes.

Purcell reportedly approached a 58-year-old man and allegedly began to shout antisemitic remarks before repeatedly punching the alleged victim.

“We welcomed the hate crime charge in this troubling case and stand in solidarity with our Jewish sisters and brothers who are increasingly targeted by antisemitic bigotry,” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher. “We thank law enforcement authorities for swift action in this case.”

Nasher said that earlier today, CAIR-NY welcomed the arrest of a suspect in a hate crime assault targeting a 17-year-old Muslim girl in Queens, N.Y.

She added that earlier this month, CAIR-NY released its 2022 hate crimes report, “Feeling the Hate: Bias and Hate Crimes Experienced by Muslim New Yorkers,” which documents the various forms of bias and hate crimes that Muslim New Yorkers have experienced.

CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
