CAIR-NY Welcomes Hate Crime Indictment for Alleged Anti-Muslim Assailant

The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) today welcomed the hate crime indictment brought against an assailant who allegedly assaulted a Muslim man in Midtown New York. 

A man who allegedly called a Muslim passer-by a “terrorist” and a “f-ing Muslim,” then brutally beat him in Midtown was freed from jail without bail. After the attack, the alleged victim was taken to NYU Langone Health in stable condition.

“With Islamophobia on the rise, it is important for our community to see hate crimes called out and prosecuted as the heinous acts they represent. We are glad to see the District Attorney’s office charge the alleged assailant accordingly, and we wish the victim of the attack a full recovery from this traumatic experience.” said CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher

She noted that CAIR-NY previously called on the public to assist in identifying the alleged assailant.

Nasher added that last week, CAIR-NY condemned the assault of a Muslim woman in Brooklyn. welcomed hate crime charges in an assault on a Muslim Uber driver. 

From January to June 2024, CAIR documented 4,951 incoming complaints, a sixty-nine percent increase over the same period in 2023.
