CAIR Offers Condolences on Sheikh Muhammad Alshareef

(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/22/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today offered its condolences on the passing of Islamic scholar and AlMaghrib Institue founder Sheikh Muhammad Alshareef.

Sheikh Muhammad passed away yesterday in Dubai. Born in Canada, he founded the AlMaghrib Institute, an Islamic studies institute based in Houston, Texas. Sheikh Muhammad memorized the Quran, Islam’s revealed text, at a young age and earned his degree in Islamic law from the Islamic University of Madina in 1999. Information on his janazah, or funeral prayer, will be made available when it is finalized.

In a statement, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“To God we belong and to Him we return. We are deeply saddened by the news of Sheikh Muhammad’s passing. He was an inspiration and a source of guidance to so many in our community, and we are confident his legacy of scholarship and service will continue to benefit American Muslims, Muslims worldwide, and all of humanity. We pray that God enters Sheikh Muhammad into the highest paradise, and grants solace and patience to his loved ones and students.”

Awad quoted a saying of Ibn Mas’ud, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which says: “The death of a scholar is a loss that cannot be replaced for as long as the day and night alternate.”

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
