CAIR Offers Condolences to Families of Victims of Nashville School Shooting, Calls on Authorities to Investigate Possible Bias Motive

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/28/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today offered condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee and called on authorities to investigate the possibility of a bias motive in the attack.

Yesterday, an individual shot and killed three children and three adults at the Covenant School, a Christian private school in suburban Nashville. The suspect was shot and killed in an altercation with police. Police have said the shooter left behind writings and “a book we consider to be like a manifesto.” Police have as of yet not identified a motive for the shooting.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We offer condolences to the loved ones of the children and educators slaughtered in this horrific attack on a Christian elementary school. Given the religious identity of the school and reports of a manifesto, we urge law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate the possibility of a bias motive. We also call on the Tennessee legislature to implement reasonable gun safety measures to reduce the threat of these mass shootings.”
