CAIR-Philadelphia Welcomes Chester Co. Commission’s Apology for Post Praising Confederate Leader

The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed an apology by the Chester County America250 PA Commission for a Facebook post praising Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America.

“We appreciate the commission’s acknowledgment that the post was inappropriate and its apology to the community,” said CAIR-Philadelphia Executive Director Ahmet Tekelioglu. “Honoring figures who fought to preserve slavery and white supremacy is deeply hurtful and inconsistent with our shared values of justice and equality.”

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
