(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/24/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today reiterated its support for calls on South Carolina lawmakers to pass a hate crime bill following the advancement of the bill in a state House subcommittee.
The Clementa C. Pickney Hate Crime Law was advanced by a South Carolina House of Representatives subcommittee yesterday. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Wendell Gilliard. South Carolina and Wyoming are the only two states without a hate crime statute.

“We once again urge South Carolina lawmakers to support the passage of hate crime legislation, which is essential in combating the rising tide of violent bigotry,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that earlier this month, CAIR supported a resolution passed by the city of Myrtle Beach encouraging the South Carolina governor and General Assembly to adopt a statewide hate crime bill.
