(WASHINGTON, D.C., 2/2/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today offered support for a set of bills pre-filed in Alabama’s legislature that would end two holidays honoring Confederate leaders and add holidays for Juneteenth and Election Day.
If passed in the legislature and signed into law, the bills would remove a state holiday commemorating Confederate President Jefferson Davis’s birthday and replace it with a “State Employee Appreciation Day.” A state holiday marking Confederate leader Robert E. Lee’s birthday would also be removed.

“We support all efforts to end the honoring of any individual who betrayed our nation in support of slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The removal of these repugnant and divisive holidays is long overdue.”
He noted that last year, CAIR welcomed the passage of Alabama’s new constitution that removed the racist language of its predecessor.
Hooper said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
