(WASHINGTON D.C., 9/1/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a call to change the names of two buildings and a street on the U.S. Naval Academy campus in Annapolis, Md.
The Naming Commission, a federal panel tasked with reviewing and changing military assets that memorialize Confederate figures, has recommended that two buildings and a street on the academy’s campus currently named for Confederate naval officers have their names changed.

“Those who attacked our nation in order to defend slavery and white supremacy do not deserve to be honored by the navy they sought to destroy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge the administration of the U.S. Naval Academy to immediately change these names.”
He noted that yesterday, CAIR joined a call for the removal of a “shameful” plaque honoring the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) from the United States Military Academy at West Point.
