The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for a federal lawsuit seeking the removal of a Confederate monument stating “appreciation of our faithful slaves” from outside of an eastern North Carolina courthouse.
The Concerned Citizens of Tyrrell County filed the lawsuit arguing that the monument constitutes discriminatory government speech.
“It is unconscionable that a monument expressing ‘appreciation’ for slavery would stand before a courthouse anywhere in our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The horrific legacy of the Confederacy and slavery should be repudiated, not honored.”
Hooper said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
