CAIR Supports Removal of New Mexico Confederate Monument, Dropping of Confederate Officer’s Name from Landmarks

(WASHINGTON D.C., 5/12/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for calls to remove a monument to a Confederate officer and white supremacist in Las Cruces, N.M.

CAIR also expressed support for renaming local landmarks named for the officer.

While several places in the Las Cruces area previously named for Confederate historical figures have had their names changed in recent years, a monument to Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Robert Baylor remains standing. A local canyon road, hiking trail and an Organ Mountain peak are also named after him.

In addition to leading Confederate troops in the area during the Civil War, Baylor also served as an editor on a racist newspaper called The White Man and was known for his hatred of Native Americans. Calls have emerged for Baylor’s name to be dropped from the landmarks.

“We support all efforts to end the honoring of those who betrayed our nation and fought to uphold systemic anti-Black racism, white supremacy and slavery,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
