CAIR Supports South Carolina City’s Proposed Hate Crime Ordinance

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for a hate crime ordinance currently poised to be passed by the city of Gaffney, South Carolina.

The bill, which mirrors similar hate crime legislation passed in other cities in the state, has been approved by the city’s legislative committee and will be considered by the city council. South Carolina is one of just two states without hate crime laws, although 19 cities have passed hate crime legislation.

“We urge elected officials in Gaffney to support this ordinance and urge other cities in South Carolina to follow suit,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We again urge state lawmakers to take action to pass a statewide hate crime law.”

He noted that CAIR has previously expressed its support for a hate crime bill to again be introduced in the South Carolian legislature.
