CAIR Supports UN General Assembly Resolution Demanding Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/12/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for a proposed United Nations General Assembly resolution demanding an immediate mutual humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

The UN General Assembly is set to vote on a resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza today. After the United States vetoed a resolution in the Security Council on Friday demanding a humanitarian ceasefire, Arab and Islamic nations called for an emergency session of the 193-member General Assembly on Tuesday afternoon to vote on a resolution making the same demand.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“A brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide is being conducted before the eyes of the world. The Israeli government has made clear its intentions to slaughter as many Palestinians as it can. Our government has failed to take any action to prevent this atrocity. By vetoing the Security Council resolution last week, the Biden administration has disregarded the wishes of the American people and ignored some of our closest allies. We are hopeful that today’s resolution will pass, but resolutions aren’t enough. The United States must change course, and the nations of the world must pressure the Israeli government to end its campaign of terror in Gaza.”

He noted that on Friday, CAIR condemned the US veto of the UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Earlier today, CAIR said the far-right Israeli government’s controlled demolition of a U.N. school in Gaza is “further evidence of the ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing.”
