CAIR Urges Hate Crime Probe for Vandalism of Utah LDS Church Building

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/4/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate vandalism targeting a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) building in Park City, Utah.

After rocks were thrown through three windows of the building, police remain undecided as to whether they will pursue the case as a hate crime since the motivation is not known.

“Whenever a facility associated with a religious community is targeted by violence, law enforcement authorities should at least consider a possible bias motive for that violence,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge local and state law enforcement authorities to investigate this troubling attack as a possible hate crime.”

Hooper noted that CAIR recently condemned a racist incident at the University of Utah.

He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
