(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/2/21) – On Friday, April 9at 5:30 PM (ET), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will host a technical webinar on how to protect Muslim community centers and Islamic houses of worship by applying to the Fiscal Year 2021 Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP).
CAIR’s training will feature guest presenters from the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Grants Program Directorate.
ABOUT THE WEBINAR: Are you a member of a Muslim community center, Islamic house of worship, or nonprofit in need of increased security? Join CAIR and FEMA to learn how to apply for FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program. This federal grant program is designed to provide funds for physical security enhancements and other security related activities to nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of violence.

ABOUT THE NONPROFIT SECURITY GRANT PROGRAM
This $180 million grant program is a part of a comprehensive set of measures authorized by Congress and implemented by DHS to help strengthen the nation’s urban and non-urban communities against potential attacks.
NSGP is a competitive grant program intended to provide federal funding for physical security enhancements and other security-related activities to nonprofit organizations that are at risk of attack.
Nonprofit organizations that are described as an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 501(c)(3) entity and able to demonstrate, through the application, that the organization is at high risk of an attack.
Applicants with one site may apply for up to $150,000 for that site. Applicants with multiple sites may apply for up to $150,000 per site, for up to three sites, for a maximum of $450,000 per sub-applicant.
As recently clarified by FEMA, there are no requirements for information sharing between nonprofits and federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement to receive the grant.
CAIR notes that there is a security review performed by the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis on prospective recipient organizations. This security review takes place after the competitive scoring and selection process is complete. The information provided for the security review is limited to the organization’s name and physical address, as submitted by the nonprofit.
CAIR is encouraging all American Muslim community nonprofits whose security grant applications are denied this or last year to contact CAIR. CAIR will review denied grant applications with the applicant and FEMA to identify why the application was denied and possible ways to improve future applications.
