(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/1/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a condemnation by 50 United Nations countries of China’s human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minority groups in the Xinjiang region.
Those 50 nations called on China to “uphold its international human rights obligations” in a joint statement read out during a UN Human Rights Committee debate on China’s abuses of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities.
The statement expressed concern that China refused to address a recent UN report which stated that human rights abuses against Uyghurs may constitute “crimes against humanity.” The joint statement also noted some of the violations China has committed against Uyghurs, including mass detention, forced abortions, forced sterilization, family separation, surveillance based on religion and ethnicity, forced labor, and restrictions on religion and cultural identity.

The 50 U.N. nations that signed on to the statement were: Albania, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Belize, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Eswatini, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Monaco, Montenegro, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Palau, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Somalia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, the UK and the US.
“We thank the 50 nations that have called on the Chinese Communist Party to end its genocidal, Islamophobic campaign of terror against Uyghur Muslims,” said CAIR Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell. “It is time for more Muslim-majority nations to also stand up against the CCP’s attempt to erase Islam from the Uyghur region of China.”
He noted that in October, CAIR called the United Nations Human Rights Council’s vote against holding a debate on the Uyghur genocide “shameful.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
