CAIR Welcomes Approval of Plan to Drop Confederate References from Military Installations

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/7/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed approval of a plan to rename several military installations currently named for Confederate historical figures and remove or modify a host of monuments and tributes to the Confederacy.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has approved the recommendations of an independent commission to rename 9 army posts and two ships and remove or modify several monuments and tributes honoring the Confederacy.

“Traitors who attacked our nation in order to uphold systemic anti-Black racism, white supremacy and slavery should not be honored by the very military they fought against,” said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. “We welcome these planned changes and urge local governments to rid themselves of any memorials to the Confederacy’s shameful legacy.”

He noted that Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
