(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/5/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a resolution by the Fort Smith, Ark., board of directors allowing the removal of a Confederate flag currently displayed at a public park.
That board voted to amend a resolution to allow the board to decide the fate of a display of historical flags, including the Confederate flag. The flags were taken down last year due to age, but the resolution allows the board to decide which flags will be put back up in the display.

“We urge the city’s board of directors not to include the Confederate flag in the display,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “Symbols of white supremacy and treason should not be memorialized.”
He noted that last year, CAIR welcomed a ruling by an Arkansas judge stating that the city of Fort Smith is not required to fly a Confederate flag.
