CAIR Welcomes Arrest of Suspect in Mississippi Synagogue Arson

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of a suspect in an arson attack that heavily damaged Beth Israel Congregation synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi, which was previously bombed by the Ku Klux Klan in 1967.

According to media reports, a suspect was arrested Saturday night after a fire was reported at the synagogue. No injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.

In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:

“We welcome the swift arrest of a suspect in this disturbing arson attack on a synagogue and commend law enforcement for taking decisive action. Houses of worship should always be places of peace and safety, never targets of hatred or violence. We call on elected officials, faith leaders and community leaders to work together to confront antisemitic hate and to protect the civil and religious rights of all communities.”

CAIR urged all religious institutions to utilize it “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet, which offers advice on how to help keep religious facilities safe. The advice in the booklet is applicable to houses of worship of all faiths.

The Muslim civil rights organization added that it and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
