(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/3/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of a suspect for an allegedly anti-Asian attack Saturday in Portland, Ore.
Portland police say a man and his 5-year-old daughter were assaulted by a man who reportedly perceived that they were of Japanese descent.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“We welcome the arrest of the suspect who allegedly carried out this attack because he perceived the reported victims to be of Asian heritage. Anti-Asian attacks are rising nationwide, and law enforcement authorities must treat all these incidents with the seriousness they deserve. Community leaders must also speak out against the hate that leads to such attacks.”
He added that the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Asian hate, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
