CAIR Welcomes Calls from International Medical Groups to Suspend Israel from World Medical Association

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed calls from international medical groups for Israel to be suspended from the World Medical Association.

A petition organized by The People’s Health Movement, the Dutch organization Doctors for Gaza, as well as the health wing of Jewish Voice for Peace said that the Israeli Medical Association (IMA) was failing “to uphold core medical ethical standards, including the WMA Declarations of Geneva and Tokyo.” It said that the IMA was also complicit in “serious violations of medical neutrality and human rights” committed by Israel’s government and military.

The petition has more than 1,300 signatories, including a number of well-known health professionals, as well as organizations such as Health Workers for Palestine in Spain, Doctors Against Genocide based in the US.

In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:

“We welcome the principled and brave stance taken by medical organizations worldwide demanding Israel be suspended from the World Medical Association. Over the course of its brutal genocide in Gaza, Israel has repeatedly targeted, killed and kidnapped medical personnel and denied Palestinians desperately-needed medical attention. Any medical organization that legitimated these atrocities has broken its oath and must be condemned.”
