The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed charges brought against a Tennessee man who allegedly threatened a mosque in that state.
Robert William Miller, 50, pleaded not guilty yesterday in federal court to making a threat against the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga. Miller allegedly sent an email to the mosque stating: “I’m going to kill all of you, Hail Satan.”
Earlier this month, CAIR welcomed charges against a man who called in a hoax bomb threat in which he falsely claimed that an Islamic center in Chattanooga would carry out a bombing against a local bar.
In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“No community should have to live in fear of being targeted because of their faith. We welcome these charges and urge authorities to continue taking threats against houses of worship seriously. We remain committed to supporting people of all faiths facing hate, harassment, or intimidation.”
He noted that yesterday, CAIR welcomed a guilty plea by a man charged with making anti-Muslim threats targeting a Maricopa, Arizona, mosque.
Saylor said CAIR offers a “Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety” booklet to help keep religious facilities safe. The advice in the booklet is applicable to all houses of worship.
Earlier this year, CAIR released its 2025 Civil Rights Report, Unconstitutional Crackdowns, which reveals that Islamophobia remains at record-high levels nationwide. CAIR said viewpoint discrimination against those speaking out against genocide and apartheid was a key factor in many cases.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR encourages community members facing bias or hate incidents to report them to law enforcement and to CAIR.
