(WASHINGTON, D.C., 7/13/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the indictment of a suspect in an alleged hate crime assault targeting a Black business owner in Portland, Ore.
The suspect is accused of attacking a Black food truck owner on June 15. The suspect reportedly approached the man and attacked him unprovoked, allegedly kicking and punching him while yelling racial slurs. The suspect has been charged with assault and a hate crime, to which he pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 23.

“We welcome the indictment of the alleged perpetrator of this disturbing crime,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We hope that the victim is able to gain justice for an alleged crime – a bias-motivated attack – that is unfortunately becoming all too common nationwide.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
