(BALTIMORE, MD, 12/4/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed an editorial published in the Johns Hopkins Newsletter calling on the university to hold a doctor who made social media posts endorsing the genocide of Palestinians to account.
Dr. Darren Klugman, Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Director at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center and an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, posted tweets referring to Palestinians as “barbaric animals.” He also expressed his support for their “large scale slaughter” and forced displacement and labeled them as “people who rape and murder civilians.”
The editorial board of the Johns Hopkins Newsletter published an op-ed calling on the university to be transparent in their investigation into Dr. Klugman’s tweets and to hold him accountable.

In a statement, CAIR Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:
“We thank the editorial staff of the Johns Hopkins Newsletter for taking a stand and seeking transparency and accountability from the university in its investigation into Dr. Klugman’s troubling comments. Medical professionals are tasked with saving lives and take an oath to do no harm. Dr. Klugman’s positions contradicted this spirit and have irreparably harmed trust within the community and among his colleagues.”
She noted that last month, CAIR called for Dr. Klugman’s termination and the revocation of his medical license.
