(WASHINGTON D.C., 9/13/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a resolution by the city council of Asheboro, N.C., in support of removing a Confederate monument currently located outside a courthouse.
The monument has been the source of controversy in Asheboro and the wider Randolph County area for years. The NAACP has attempted to get the statue removed several times. In March, Randolph County commissioners voted unanimously to keep the statue where it currently stands. While the city council ultimately does not have the power to remove the statue, Asheboro’s mayor says he hopes the resolution will spark a discussion among Randolph County commissioners, community members and state leaders.

“We thank members of Asheboro’s city council for supporting the removal of this monument to white supremacy and systemic anti-Black racism,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “The treasonous Confederacy sought to defend slavery, and symbols glorifying it do not belong outside government buildings.”
He noted that last year, CAIR supported the NAACP’s call for the monument to be removed.
