(WASHINGTON, D.C., 9/30/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed an investigation into alleged racist comments made during a high school soccer game in Utah.
Utah’s Nebo and Provo school districts are investigating allegations that fans made racist comments during a soccer game at Salem Hills High School last week. After the referee called a foul during the game, Provo players reported hearing racist comments from fans and asked to stop the game. A Provo district spokesperson said the district takes “any allegations of this nature very seriously” and is committed to ensuring such incidents do not occur in the future.

“No student should be subjected to racist harassment, whether during athletic competition or in any other setting,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We thank the school districts for launching an investigation into this incident and hope concrete actions are taken as a result of that investigation.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
