CAIR Welcomes Renaming of Alabama Military Installation for Medal of Honor Recipient

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/12/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the decision to rename the U.S. Army’s Fort Rucker in Alabama as Fort Novosel.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael Novosel Sr. received the Medal of Honor after a 1969 mission in Vietnam. He did two tours in Vietnam, during which he rescued 5,500 wounded soldiers. The fort’s previous namesake, Col. Edmund Rucker, fought for the Confederate army.

“We welcome the removal of a name honoring a traitor to our nation and its replacement with one that truly deserves to be honored,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Earlier this year, CAIR welcomed the renaming of a U.S. Navy ship named for a battle won by the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Last year, CAIR welcomed a decision by Alabama’s Montgomery County Board of Education to rename two schools currently named for Confederate historical figures.

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
