The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s condemnation of the government of Thailand for deporting Uyghurs to China.
CAIR yesterday called for that action by the State Department.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) Secretary Rubio wrote:
“Thailand forcibly returned a group of Uyghurs to China. As a longstanding ally of Thailand, we are alarmed by this action, which runs afoul of its international obligations. The U.S. condemns this action. We urge the Thai government to ensure and verify that the Uyghurs are treated with dignity and that their rights are protected.”
In a statement, CAIR Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“We welcome Secretary Rubio’s condemnation of the Thai government’s decision to deport Uyghur Muslims to China, and we encourage the State Department to consistently speak up for the human rights of all oppressed people, whether in China, Burma, Palestine, India or elsewhere.”
