(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/8/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed community support for a New Mexico Muslim student who was bullied over her religious head scarf, or hijab.
Students and staff at Camino Real Middle School in Las Cruces offered support for the seventh-grade student after other students reportedly called her a “terrorist” and taunted her with Islamophobic slurs.

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“We welcome the support shown for this student who faced Islamophobic bullying and urge educators in New Mexico and nationwide to address the growing bullying faced by Muslim and other minority students.”
