(WASHINGTON D.C., 10/5/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the suspension of a North Carolina sheriff following the revelation of racist statements he allegedly made.
Last month, CAIR called for the resignation of Columbus County Sheriff Jody Greene and welcomed an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) into his alleged racist comments.
A judge has ordered Greene be immediately suspended from office after District Attorney Jon David filed a petition requesting his removal. David cited racist remarks made by Greene during a recorded phone conversation in 2019.
Superior Court Judge Douglas B. Sasser agreed to Greene’s suspension pending a hearing on the petition for removal.

“We welcome this suspension and hope it ultimately results in law enforcement leadership that respects and serves minority communities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
