CAIR Welcomes U.S. Surgeon General’s Call to Add Cancer Warnings to Alcohol Products

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a call by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to add a warning label to alcoholic drinks Americans consume.

In his advisory, Murthy says alcohol consumption is to blame for almost one million preventable cancer cases in the U.S. over the last decade and that about 20,000 people die every year from alcohol-related cancer. Alcoholic drinks already carry warning labels for pregnant women and those driving vehicles, but Murthy calls for adding a cancer warning.

In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome the U.S. Surgeon General’s call to add cancer warnings to alcohol products. Cancer is just one of the many ways that alcohol consumption leads to death, disaster and disease for Americans every year. Alcohol’s victims include people who do not even drink, yet suffer the consequences of deadly car crashes, physical violence and other incidents brought on by alcohol consumption. The harm caused by this legalized drug outweighs any financial and recreational benefits, and we support governmental efforts to educate and warn Americans – especially young people – about its dangers.”

He noted that Muslims are prohibited from consuming alcohol.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
