CAIR Welcomes US Sanctions on Chinese Officials Over Abuses Against Uyghurs and Tibetans, Calls for Sanctions on Israeli Officials for Gaza Genocide

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, today welcomed US sanctions on Chinese officials due to ongoing human rights abuses against Uyghurs, Tibetans and other ethnic groups in China. CAIR also called on the Biden administration to place sanctions on Israeli officials over the Gaza genocide.

The US will be imposing visa restrictions on Chinese officials due to continuing human rights violations against minority groups. The ongoing human rights violations include “the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, the erosion of fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong, persistent human rights abuses in Tibet, and transnational repression around the world.”

“We welcome the sanctions against officials complicit in the campaign of genocide and erasure targeting Uyghur Muslims and the Chinese government’s many other abuses,” said CAIR Government Affairs Coordinator Shafiquil Muhshna. “We urge the Biden administration to also sanction Israeli officials involved in the genocide in Gaza.”

Muhshna added that CAIR recently said a new report by Scripps News and Bellingcat shows that Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza is seeking to erase Palestinian culture.

She noted that last month, CAIR condemned the reported re-sentencing of a Uyghur Muslim woman to 14 years in prison for teaching the Quran to teenagers.
