CAIR Welcomes Va. Schools Dropping Confederate, Enslavers Names

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/21/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed move by Virginia’s Richmond Public Schools to begin a transition to four new school names previously links to Confederate figures or enslavers.

“This is a positive step toward inclusivity and embracing a more diverse educational environment that will promote a sense of belonging and respect for all students,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No student should have to learn in a school named for someone who defended or profited from slavery and white supremacy.” 

He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate names, holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
