CAIR’s Maryland Office Calls for Stepped-Up Assistance to Afghan Evacuees Temporarily Housed in Baltimore

(BALTIMORE, MD, 1/24/22) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for stepped-up assistance for up to forty Afghan evacuee families in the Baltimore region following reports that they have been staying in an extended stay facility as temporary housing since last October following the mass evacuations from Kabul in August 2021.

Those evacuees say they are in need of healthcare (especially for pregnant mothers and new infants), documents, schooling for children, help with job placement, and other resources necessary to get settled in their new homes. Local volunteers are assisting the refugees but are calling for a centralized aid effort.

“After the ordeal they’ve experienced, these families need our help to begin new lives in the United States,” said CAIR Office in Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “CAIR is alarmed to learn that despite significant funding allocated towards this project through federal contracts, caseworkers from assigned agencies have not been adequately following up and seeing to the needs of these children, women and men who’ve been forced to rely on the generosity of strangers for months for basic items like food, clothing and toys. These families are especially at risk during this pandemic.”

CAIR is in touch with some of the evacuees and is coordinating a site visit later today to better assess the situation.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
