About the General Assembly

The General Assembly is Maryland’s Legislative body and directly represents the electorates.

The legislature:

  • Enacts laws necessary for the welfare of the State’s citizens and certain laws dealing with counties and special taxing districts.
  • Proposes amendments to the Maryland Constitution, which must be ratified by voters during the general election.
  • Meets in regular session for 90 calendar days each year beginning the second Wednesday in January to act on more than 2500 pieces of legislation and the State’s annual capital and operating budgets.
  • Meets in special session when called by the Governor or when a majority of each house petitions the Governor.

“The Maryland General Assembly is responsible for passing laws that affect the welfare of Maryland citizens,” said United Maryland Muslim Council’s President Zia Ashraf. “This is a great opportunity for the community to get involved in legislative and community engagement. Furthermore, it gives attendees the opportunity to make their voices heard regarding issues the community cares about.”

“Understanding how the Maryland General Assembly works is essential for anyone looking to make a meaningful impact on their community,” said CAIR Maryland’s Outreach Coordinator, Kimberly Syuardi. “By learning about the legislative process, we can better advocate for the policies and changes that matter most to us and our families. We encourage our community to attend and be engaged.”
