(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/13/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today issued new guidance to students speaking and advocating against Islamophobia and for Palestinian rights.

This guidance comes as Islamophobia and the targeting of pro-Palestinian activists – in some cases prompted by the rhetoric of public officials – is spiking nationwide.
Today’s guidance includes tips on speaking and advocating for impact effectively, as well as considerations for advocates who are entering advocacy work for the first time.
“Students have the right to speak and advocate for human rights, and this guide is intended to support them in doing so effectively,” said CAIR Research & Advocacy Director Corey Saylor.
The guide also includes advice on how students and advocates can express their support while staying safe.
He continued: “Frequently, advocates and students are targeted online for their support of Palestinian human rights, and we want them to know that it is possible to – and many people do – advocate for these issues while staying safe.”
Yesterday, the organization also released guidance focused on speech rights in educational settings and addressing any bullying that may result, including tools for advocates to protect themselves from doxxing. The organization encourages all students experiencing interference or suppression of their free speech in educational settings or facing bullying to document it and contact us.
