Sumayyah bint Khayyat – #WomensHistoryMonth

By all accounts, Sumayyah Bint Khayyat led an unremarkable life until her death. She stood alone in truth, refusing to denounce Islam despite unspeakable torture for her beliefs and ultimately her death. Sumayyah is the first shahidah – martyr – of Islam, dying after refusing to denounce her faith.

Sumayyah’s story is one of power versus weakness. Born in modern day Ethiopia, Sumayyah was about 20 years older than the Prophet Muhammad. She was an old, frail, woman who held no social status in Mecca when Abu Jahl, a member of the ruling Quraysh of Mecca and one of early Islam’s staunchest enemies, led the persecution of those who accepted Islam.

Abu Jahl held great power and stature in Mecca. He was willing to do anything to protect his status. Yet, even with all his power, Sumayyah, someone seemingly powerless and inconsequential, stood up to him as no one else did. Despite torture and public humiliation, she refused to say anything that would displease Allah. Abu Jahl was unsuccessful in making her renounce her faith and curse the Prophet publicly. He killed her with a spear to her midsection.

Sumayyah’s bravery and dedication to truth changed history and remains an inspiration to all Muslims. By promoting justice, defending civil rights and ensuring Muslims in America can practice their faith without persecution, we hope to honor her legacy of heroism.
