(BALTIMORE, MD, 7/6/2021) — The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today opened registration for its 6th annual Maryland Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium (#MYLS2021).
This year’s event will be held virtually on Saturday, August 21, 2021, and is themed “Vision 2021: Imagining Progress Through Conflict Resolution.”

CAIR’s MYLS programs are designed to train participants to develop strong leadership skills through raising self-awareness and participating in team-building exercises. Past events have featured tours of state buildings and meetings with elected leaders. While Maryland has lifted its COVID-19 state of emergency, this year’s event will be held virtually out of an abundance of caution.
BACKGROUNDER:
Conflict is a common and inevitable part of life. It exists because people have different perspectives, priorities, personalities, opinions and lived experiences – which means they will not always agree or get along. Because it is a normal part of life, having the ability to resolve conflicts effectively is a crucial skill especially for leaders to develop. Conflict resolution skills are especially useful for students to address or prevent peer-to-peer aggression, harassment, and bullying. Being able to resolve or extricate oneself from a situation before it escalates is one of the most effective ways to reduce the incidence of bullying in schools and social settings. Resolving conflicts helps build confidence, achieve goals, and strengthen relationships. But if ignored, avoided, or handled ineffectively, they can quickly transform into personal dislike and lead to the breakdown of relationships. Conflict resolution requires negotiation to solve problems and find solutions. It involves asserting oneself while respecting others. These techniques help build stronger relationships and pave the way to personal and professional growth.
The core mission of MYLS is to encourage civic and political engagement among American Muslim youth, empower them to guide their communities from the margins to the mainstream of society and to help foster a well-integrated American Muslim identity that flourishes in a pluralistic society.
CAIR has been organizing youth leadership programs in states across the country for more than a decade. Participants of these programs have gone on to become respected community leaders, activists, community organizers, and youth leaders.
