CAIR Welcomes Dropping of Confederate, White Supremacist Street Names in Charlotte, N.C.

(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/15/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the dropping of street names associated with the Confederacy and white supremacy in Charlotte, N.C.

The city of Charlotte will rename Morrison Boulevard and all four sections of East/West Hill Street in March. Morrison Boulevard is currently named for former governor and leader of the white supremacist ‘Red Shirts’ militia Cameron Morrison, and Hill Street is named for Confederate Maj. Gen. D.H. Hill.

“We welcome the recognition that those who fought to uphold systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy do not deserve to be honored in public spaces in Charlotte,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We urge all towns and cities nationwide to remove similar symbols of hatred and bigotry.”

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate flags, statues and symbols from public spaces nationwide.
